The
ODIN is a unique concept for libraries and archives. The
system uses a high level full colour video unit with a
high magnification zoom lens mounted to provide full x
and y axis movement over the 2mtr x 2mtr base.
This movement is controlled remotely by the use of a joystick
allowing disabled and visually impaired readers to access
large format documents without contact.
The image is viewed at up to 24x magnification. The speed
of movement is variable, so if required, words can be read
a single magnified letter at a time.
The system includes a lifting book cradle to facilitate
the viewing of large volumes under glass. The ODIN was designed
with the valuable assistance of The London Metropolitan
Archive. This new product will allow original documents
and books to be protected while at the same time increasing
access to those readers who have previously been excluded
from the Archive experience.
